Karen Donnellan

I am a practising artist and educator with over 15 years of experience working creatively with people of all ages; from 3-year-olds in early years settings to postgraduate students in fine art programmes. I am currently substitute teaching in mainstream primary and special education schools across Sligo.

My not-so-secret agenda is one of Love, justice, beauty, magic, a good laugh, and sensory pleasure. While I use a wide range of media, glass and sound are central to this endeavour. Glass holds light; sound carries vibration. Both speak the language of the mystical.

Spanning sculpture, installation, language, performance, books and music, my work has been exhibited internationally at the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Toyama Museum of Glass, and is held in public and private collections worldwide.

I hold a B. Design in Glass from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and an MFA in Glass from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. From 2014 to 2022, I served as Director of the National Casting Center Glass Studios, Associate Professor of Glass, and Chair of the Sculpture/Dimensional Studies Program at Alfred University, NY.

My art workshop facilitation leans towards open-ended, process-led making; work that leaves room for surprise and for each child's own voice to come through.
